Can my dentures be whitened?

Unfortunately, the materials dentures are made out of do not promote easy or successful whitening. There are ways to minimize staining or prevent it before it occurs, though. Cleaning your dentures daily like you would have cleaned your teeth is your first step to keeping them white. There are specific cleaners and brushes you should use for your dentures to make sure you don't scuff or scratch them while you are cleaning. Cleaning dentures will also keep bad bacteria away that can harm your gums or give you bad breath. When cleaning your dentures, you should be thorough about it – brush every surface. Use only dentures toothpaste, rather than the kind you would use for teeth. Some solutions are available that could help keep your dentures the whitest they can be, but these can be discussed in full when you visit. You can also have your dentures professionally cleaned.

Can I repair my dentures with a store-bought kit?

You should never try to fix or adjust your own dentures if there is a problem. You should always have any alterations made by a professional to extend the life of your dentures and to avoid breaking them permanently. Repairing your own dentures can lead to many problems, like making chewing more difficult, causing a bad fit and mouth sores, and just flat out breaking them. Bring your dentures into our general dentistry so we can take a look at the structure and fit before you try anything else.

Is sleeping with my dentures in safe?

Yes, it is safe to sleep with your dentures in, but that doesn't mean you should. It is best to remove your dentures at night so your gums and bones have an opportunity to rest and also so your dentures can be cleaned and stored in liquid at night. If you have to wear your dentures to sleep, make sure you thoroughly clean them that day. If you accidentally fall asleep wearing them, it won't cause any long-term problems, and you will be safe. Dentures should always be secure enough to not fall out accidentally. If yours feel overly loose, have them adjusted by our general dentistry as soon as possible.

Can I chew gum?

Chewing gum can harm your dentures, so we advise patients to avoid doing it. Gum can stick to the plastic surface of your dentures and bend them out of shape or break a seal that keeps them in place securely. We advise you don't risk causing harm to your dentures.
